Accton, Alvarion to Form Mobile WiMAX JV

Accton, a Taiwan-based network equipment maker, announced on January 8 that it will form a joint venture with Alvarion, an Israel-based WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) base station maker, with an initial capitalization of US$4 million. This new company, named AWB (Accton Wireless Broadband), in which Accton holds an 85% stake and Alvarion 15%, will develop mobile WiMAX CPE (Consumer Premises Equipment) based on IEEE 802. 16e – 2005 WiMAX standards. Accton will be responsible for production, and PC cards and gateways compliant to the mobile WiMAX standards are expected to hit the market in the second quarter of 2007.
